Aku is the first image I made at the NASA/JPL computer graphics lab, where I was the Artist in Residence from 1976 to 1988.

Jim Blinn, who wrote the imaging and animation software we used, probably thought it was trivial, but Bob Holzman, who ran the lab, loved it and bought a copy he framed and hung in the entrance to his home.
